I almost forgot to write this newsletter.
It is 11:18 a.m as I write this, and the newsletter is supposed to release at 12 p.m.
However, this delay is for good reason.
What Happened, Frank?
I just finished editing Impostor to Icon (launching 4/28).
I also dropped the landing page for the book earlier this morning.
In all that deep work, I did not remember my newsletter!
Although this may prove a shorter (and somewhat uneventful) piece, I still have three lessons for you to take away from all this.
Three lessons regarding the cornerstone of all hard work: consistency.
Number 1: Set Hard Deadlines on Yourself
If you want to make progress fast (and consistently), set fast deadlines.
Doesn’t seem that complicated. But for a lot of people, it is.
They believe that if they give themselves all the time in the world, that they can finish everything they set out to do.
But it is within these hard-set deadlines that creativity can truly thrive.
You have to:
Work with limited time
Work with limited resources
Work with your own discipline + time management
It also builds your tolerance to pressure.
The more you can manage razor-thin deadlines, the more effectively you can HEROICALLY conquer everything before you, in half the time.
It’s never about doing it later.
It’s about doing it now, so you don’t have to do it later.
Number 2: Stay Flexible (Not by Stretching, Either)
People who desire to hit the gym, learn a new language, or try a challenge like “75 Hard” have on thing in common:
Most of them quit when they miss a day.
They expect to put in their 100% presence every day, and are sorely disappointed when life becomes life, and gets in your way.
Remember that you don’t need to have a crushing victory every day.
Show up, and push the boulder forward. Even if it’s by mere inches.
Number 3: Be the Last Man Standing
The man who writes 100 words every day for a year will ALWAYS beat the man who writes 1k words a day for a month.
You don’t need to be the guy who clocks 16-hour days every day.
But you need to be the hero who shows up, pushes a lot, sometimes a little, and keeps on doing it every day.
I’ve been on X for 3 months, and 80% of the guys I started out with have already QUIT.
If you can stick with any business, or any hobby for 6 months, you’ve outlasted at least 90% of people.
A year, that number’s 95%.
A couple of years and beyond? You’re approaching top 1% status.
Mind you, these aren’t based on concrete numbers, but on my experience.
But the point still stands: seek to be the last man standing, not the one whose fire burns the brightest for only a while.
Whew! Glad I Still Got That Done
I wrote the following words in about 15 minutes.
I could’ve just said, “Eh, I’ll delay today’s newsletter.”
But I still had a lesson I wanted to share. A strong desire to push that boulder.
And so, here I am, writing to you in all hastiness.
However, I hope that I haven’t been yapping, and what I say is true.
